In Roll 04 we followed Mattia Marzorati, Italian photojournalist based near Como, on the development of his project The Land of Holes.
Photography represents for Mattia an important communication tool that can help foster social change. Social and environmental issues are indeed central themes in his work, which over time has become increasingly concerned with the scandals that have marked the territory OF Northern Italy, where he was born and raised.
His project “The Land of Holes” focuses on the province of Brescia, where the worst contamination of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) ever recorded worldwide bursts the highest incidence of cancers in the country.
Mattia documented a myriad of stories, both invisible and impossible to ignore, reflecting on the contradictions created by an entrenched and unsustainable, self-destructive economic system and on the ultimate price the population and ecosystems of that region are paying.
