In Roll 03 we followed Matteo Di Giovanni, Italian photographer based in Milan, along the creation of two chapters of his loose trilogy shot between the Po River Delta, in Veneto, and Abruzzo.
His inclination for wander and his urge to widen his horizons drove him on to new adventures at a young age, as he enters the world of photojournalism. It is during one of his adventures that Matteo’s life takes a turn for the worst, as he is involved in a tragic accident in Serbia which changes his life deeply.
From that moment, through photography Matteo explores his new relationship with the world, in an attempt to rediscover his own limits by pushing them to the extreme; an extreme that becomes physical in his journey to the North Cape, and that finally takes shape in his first paper book I Wish The World Was Even.
But in Matteo’s exploration, there is no escape from the unknown; it is precisely this uncertainty, the same one that has suddenly overwhelmed his life, that leads him to get closer to the inhabitants of the Po Delta region in Veneto, Northern Italy, a land of deep traditions, which is fighting for survival. His second series Blue Bar takes the texture of its white fog and the shapes of wetland, becoming a metaphor of the photographer’s personal investigation, and of people’s existential condition in today’s society.
